TAKE ACTION! Urge Congress to Pass Fair, Humane Comprehensive Immigration Reform
During the August recess, the movement for fair immigration reform kept the pressure on with events in every state calling for the change our communities need.
Now that House members are back in session, we need them to prioritize immigration reform again. We must contact our Congresspeople NOW and tell them that we need a path to citizenship for the 11 million aspiring citizens waiting for that opportunity. But in addition to a roadmap to citizenship, we need an immigration reform that promotes public safety and human dignity by not further criminalizing immigrants or militarizing the border.
In June, the Senate passed immigration reform with a robustly bipartisan 68-32 vote. The bill granted an opportunity for legalization for many of the millions of immigrants waiting for that chance, and provided some important protections for immigrant workers. But at the same time, the bill approved billions in increased spending on border militarization, and stepped up enforcement of immigration laws that will further divide families. In addition, millions of aspiring Americans will simply not meet the requirements for legalization under the Senate bill, especially low-income immigrants who cannot afford the application fees.
Now the battle has moved to the House. House Committees have approved five bills, none of which create a path to citizenship, and all of which contain troubling provisions that would harm North Carolinians. The measures include the “SAFE Act” which further increases collaboration between local police and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in a way that will be damaging to public safety for all of us. Click here to learn more about bills such as the SAFE Act, which could encourage racial profiling, and the Agricultural Guestworker Act, which fails to provide an opportunity for farmworkers to pursue a roadmap to citizenship.
