URGENT Action Alert: H409 Adjust Hiring Practices in committee April 5

We have good news to report. House Bill 409 State Agencies/Adjust Hiring Practices was heard in the NC House State Personnel Committee on Wednesday, April 5th, and received a unanimous favorable report vote!

HB 409 will next be heard in House Judiciary III Committee TOMORROW, TUESDAY, APRIL 11, at 11:00 a.m. in Room 421 of the Legislative Office Building. Please contact members of House Judiciary III Committee ASAP and ask them to vote for HB 409 which provides an important step to improve public safety by helping people who have made mistakes in the past find meaningful employment and live fulfilling, productive lives.

The bill moves the question about the criminal record of an applicant for NC State employment from the initial application until after the interview, giving the applicant a chance to meet the employer face-to-face. This offers NC State Agencies the opportunity to take full consideration of an applicant's qualifications, skills, and rehabilitation efforts, as well as information from background checks, into account before making a hiring decision.

More than 1.5 million North Carolinians have a criminal record, making it extremely difficult to find work. HB 409 is an important step to improve public safety by helping people who have made mistakes in the past find meaningful employment and live fulfilling, productive lives.
