TAKE ACTION! Let Senators Tillis and Burr know they made the wrong choice for N.C.

Last week, the U.S. Senate rejected three different bills designed to repeal the ACA and gut the Medicaid program. Thankfully, 51 senators—including 3 Republicans—voted NO on the final repeal bill.

Unfortunately, U.S. Senators Thom Tillis and Richard Burr chose to prioritize politics over people, joining the 47 other Republican Senators who voted YES. In fact, both Tillis and Burr rubber stamped all three repeal proposals, which would have resulted in 15 to 32 million Americans losing coverage.

And they voted this way after a shockingly non-transparent process. They drafted a bill behind closed doors on a party-line basis with no committee meetings, no public hearings, and no expert testimony, culminating in passage of a motion-to-proceed despite no legislative text being available. Procrastinating college students would be embarrassed by the Senate’s process—Republican leadership drafted the final bill, which would affect one-sixth of the economy and millions of Americans, just hours before voting on it. And then Mitch McConnell’s pitch to Senators Burr and Tillis? Vote for this bill, which we do not want to actually become law.

It was a shameful exercise that revealed Senators Burr and Tillis’ lack of regard for democratic norms and for their constituents’ access to health care.

With the vote behind us, the battle may seem won, but we can’t forget that Tillis and Burr did not represent our best interests. They refused to talk to us, listen to us, or engage with us on the topic of health care reform. But worst of all, they voted to strip millions of coverage, revive discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions, and slash Medicaid coverage for low-income children and people with disabilities.

They must be held accountable.

Email Senators Tillis and Burr to let them know they made the wrong choice for North Carolina.
