Let's Talk, North Carolina: A Conversation with Kathryn Edin, Author of $2 a Day

An estimated 1.5 million American adults and 3 million children live on $2 a day or less.

This is the startling finding of sociologist Kathryn Edin in her book, "$2 a Day: Living on Almost Nothing in America," which was co-authored with H. Luke Shaefer. The book documents the exponential growth of the number of Americans living with almost no cash income in the house and the various ways in which they survive each day.

The North Carolina Justice Center, in partnership with Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont, Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy and Foundation For The Carolinas, will host Kathryn Edin for a keynote speech in Charlotte that is free and open to the public on Jan. 24. Edin, along with the Panel Response after her speech, will lift up the realities faced by families surviving in such deep poverty in our state and demonstrate the critical role that systems and policy choices play in alleviating or worsening economic challenges.
